Rivington class became expert designers
Rivington class became expert designer this week as they set about creating a water movement system. The challenge was set by Mr.Maloney who had heard the children were looking at shadufs (a tool used by the ancient Egyptians) to move water from the River Nile into their irrigation channels in order to water their crops.
The children went through the strict design process of:
- Research/investigate
- Design
- Make
- Evaluate
They designed their own models firstly, evaluated them and were then further set the challenge of creating real life shadufs in the Garden of Eden. Both the girls group and the boys group successfully created a shaduf fit for purpose! See the photos of the design and making process below!
In literacy, the children have been studying Newspaper reports and their specific features before writing their own report upon a fictional incident that occurred by the banks of the River Nile in Egypt where a farmer was injured by the counter weight on his shaduf! Master headline creator, Jake, came up with a fantastic headline that read:
SHA-DUUUFF!
.. symbolising the weight collapsing upon the unfortunate farmer! Well done Jake.
