More Mixing for Mega Mix Mad Class
From making cakes using ingredients written in French, to creating a Marvellous Mixture of liquids and soluble and insoluble solids … (and then having to work out how to separate them all again!) … That’s been our week in Rivington Class.
On Monday, we had an excursion down to Asda where we used our maths skills to price up and buy ingredients to produce a ‘Colourful cake.’ Once the cake ingredients had been purchased, the class set about labelling them all in French and creating a list of instructions for making the cake. Once all this had been done, the children got to mix their ingredients, bake their cake and, of course, eat it!
In science we have looked at what scientific equipment is used for and chosen our own equipment for an experiment into separating mixtures…mixtures we had made together the previous day using salt, water, soil, leaves and anything else we found lying around really! Once we realised it was impossible to use the equipment we had to separate the soluble solids dissolved in liquids, we had to come up with a better plan, and some bright spark suggested heating it to evaporate the water to see if that would work…IT DID! On Friday, we then put ourselves into the ‘shoes’ of the water particles that had to endure being heated to boiling point and evaporated into a gas to produce a ‘Day in the Life’ diary entry for a water particle. The results are entertaining to say the least.
