STATE OF MATTER

STATE OF MATTER

This week we have embarked on our Mega Mixes topic. We have firstly recapped on what we mean by a liquid, a solid and a gas. The children were dubious about gas as it is something you can’t always see, so we decided to create experiments to prove its existence. The children split off into groups and began to plan a simple experiment that used at least one piece of equipment to prove gas exists. One group, for example, decided to time themselves running with and without an umbrella to prove the air existed because it was slowing them down. Another group made bubbles using gas and fairy liquid. A third group used the super soaker to prove how injecting air into a canister will increase the air pressure and make the water fire further. Some, simple yet clever ideas!

In literacy we started to read and analyse the book George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. We looked the effect it has on the audience by reading it with enthusiasm and by using voices for different characters; the wondrous variety he uses to create interesting sentences and comedy and finally the quality of characters he chooses to engross the reader. The children really enjoyed the opening few chapters and are looking forward to reading on.

In maths the children have moved onto short division or ‘bus stop’ division for solving word problems. Not all of us have mastered this yet but we will continue to try next week.
