Two Trips in One Week!

This week we went on two trips…both of them were field trips which is a trip where you study geography.  The first one was to Formby Point National Trust Nature reserve where we studied sand dune erosion and deposition. After a cold start on the beach, we soon realised why the sand dunes erode away so easily…the wind! We conducted a strand line investigation looking for natural and man-made objects washed onto the beach. We then decided to head up into the mobile dunes and saw the erosion first hand as we were literally hit in the face by sand carried on the wind. We studied the marram grass and their roots which hold the sand dunes together and found out how humans erode the sand dunes when they trample the grass. We then headed into the fixed dunes to study the vegetation and animal habitats. After a long morning of investigation, we leisurely strolled around the squirrel sanctuary where we managed to see at least 3 red squirrels. Finally we made a note of how the land was used in the areas around the sand dunes for a land use survey.

Our second trip was also a field trip…a river walk down in Astley Park to investigate the River Chor. It was ace. We walked in the river, under bridges and across fallen trees and studied the human and physical features of the river. There were place where the power of the water had really eroded the river walls and places where man had strengthened the walls with stones and walls. We saw landslides, tributaries, deposition and even a confluence. We finished the day with a poo- sticks race to measure river speed at different points on the river. A great day was had by us all.

We finished the day by getting back to school and planting our own bluebell bulbs in the Garden of Eden ready for blooming next year.
