Temperatures rise in Year 5

The thermometers have been out this week as we measure the temperatures of one another and various other items in our negative numbers maths topic. The children dealt with negative numbers in the context of temperature, money and elevation and tried to work out difference between different positive and negatives amounts… which actually proved rather tricky.

Our Space topic is now well under way as the children completed various tasks relating to our own solar system and the planets orbiting the sun. The children were set tasks such as creating a solar system made from play-doh, creating a roughly scale model of the solar system using marbles, chalk and black material and by creating different mnemonics to remember the order of the planets in our solar system. Many creative and, quite frankly bizarre mnemonics were created including:

‘My Very Energetic Mother Just Served Us Noodles’ where the first letter of each represents the first letter of the planets i.e. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

See the pics below for some of the activities we have done this week.
